Arion, Episode 55: Contact in Space

#1

“You’re in the 4th Ring and that can be a bit dicey. Your ship is empty, having just sold off your cargo. Opportunities await you!” – 5150 No Limits: Maiden Voyage
Deep Space, June ’01

Specifically, encounter 9 (page 60) of the published campaign awaits… this is an exercise in resolving a spacefaring PEF, and I’ll say it’s the involuntary encounter at the beginning of June.

What have we met? 1d6 = 4, Gaea Prime Star Navy. Ooh, haven’t met them before. I wonder if they’ll be friends with us?

Dolphin, this is the Gaea Prime Star Navy Cutter Ardent, state your business and destination.”

“No ‘please’, I notice,” Coriander sniffs.

“Careful, Cori, the mike could have been open,” says Arion. “Dolphin, patch me through please.”

“Yes, captain… you’re live.”

Ardent, this is GP trader Dolphin inbound to New Hope, with an empty hold.”

This exchange is gamed out on the NPC Interaction Table (p. 70), where Arion passes 2d6 and the NPC captain (Rep 5, Crack Shot) also passes 2d6. There’s a special results table for this encounter on page 60, which I refer to; the cutter exchanges pleasantries and leaves.

Dolphin, you and your captain are in the GP database, and in light of your excellent record, I see no need to take this further. A piece of advice though; trading with an empty hold isn’t very profitable. Happy landings. Ardent out.”

“Thanks Ardent, we’ll take that to heart. Dolphin out.” Arion cuts the channel.

“Excellent record?” sniggers Dmitri. “You two?”

“Well, I certainly have,” boasts the Dolphin. “And I felt my captain’s record should reflect that. I have my reputation to consider.”

“You hacked the database.”

“‘Hacked’ is such a harsh word. I prefer ‘adjusted’.”

Character Updates

Nothing takes effect this time, but we need some increasing Rep d6 sharpish or we’re in trouble.

  • Arion: Rep 7 Spaceship Crew, Quick Reflexes, Resilient. BAP2, P1, melee, SBA. Lifetime Rep: 11.
  • Coriander: Rep 5 Doctor, Free Spirit, Smooth. A3, melee, SBA. Lifetime Rep: 12.
  • Dmitri: Rep 4 Investigator, Logical, Smooth. BAP2, P1, melee, SBA. Lifetime Rep: 9.
  • Rep d6: 3 decreasing (ship upkeep), 1 increasing for Arion only (NPC interaction, no-one else spoke to them).
GM Notes

In a solitaire game, there are often surprises – otherwise there’d be no point playing. Those surprises sometimes mean nothing happens. And that’s OK.

The next official encounter (10) will find us in Ring 7, having been hired to attack some traders. This is another place where I think there are some encounters missing, so I will adjust the flow of events in the next post.

Meanwhile, after an early surge, it looks like we’re heading for the usual rapid descent to the bottom of the the Rep ladder.

Totally agree, but it's such a temptation to 'make something happen.' I have resisted the temptation so far in 'Currents' :p
