Other Games Fria Ligan to produce Alien the Role Playing Game

#1
It seems success follows success, and Fria Ligan a.k.a. Free League will publish the Alien: The RPG (and of course Modiphius Entertainment will surely distribute it as usual).

So move over "Things from the Flood" and open the airlock to "Alien: The Role Playing Game".

Key information that may attract or discourage hardcore role players:

The Play Style
For people well-versed in RPGs, there’s a traditional campaign, where players can take on the role of blue-collar workers, marines, explorers, even androids, venturing into the Outer Rim and encountering lots of face-hugging aliens. For others who may be trying roleplaying for the first time, there’s the “Cinematic” experience, a series of pre-generated storylines that can be played in a single sitting
The Timeline
Alien: The Roleplaying Game is more open-ended, taking place in the Alien universe with original characters and brand-new stories. That means we won’t be seeing in-game cameos from movie characters like Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) ...
“We’re focusing more on certain aspects of the universe than others. I think the key thing there is we’ve set our game in the year 2183, that’s a very conscious choice,” he said. “The more recent prequel movies, Prometheus andAlien: Covenant, those are part of the canon, part of the story and universe. But as they take place in a much earlier era, that era is not where our focus lies.”

Chris Birch must have friends in high places too. I just read on another site, the broker is Joe LeFavi of Genuine Entertainment, who will manage the license on behalf of Free League and serve as an editor on the game series. Alien is the latest in a slew of high-profile tabletop deals by LeFavi, including the master tabletop gaming license for Dune, the tabletop RPG series for Altered Carbon, and multiple brand extensions of World of Darkness.

Also, Paul Elliot made a good choice joining the Fria Ligan MYZ engine train, though his own Cepheus engine is good gritty hard Sci-Fi, the MYZ plays faster from my experience with Things from the Flood.

So, I just popped over to the official Alien franchise site to catch up (I only got as far as Aliens back in the day) and it’s full of 40th Anniversary news. That’s odd, thought I, that’s much older than I thought, that would put it back in.... 1979. Oh. Anyways, moving on...

Lots of “interesting” merchandising to celebrate the Anniversary (no mention of the RPG yet, but they haven’t updated since yesterday), including a book of blueprints for the iconic spacecraft which is now on my wishlist.

The original ‘Alien’ film was released in 1979.
I remember sneaking into our local cinema with my brother to see it back then.

Yeah, I saw the “40th” thing, went “no, surely not” then did the calculation and had to recalibrate... Didn’t see it when it came out, though some of my school friends did, so maybe that’s why it felt like 40 years was too long ago.

I'm not sure how I feel about one of our go-to one-shot sci fi plots having its own actual RPG again. Does that mean we can't rip off Aliens for every other sci fi horror con game? Or will it be easier to hide the influences because of there being an actual RPG of Aliens?

Assuming it'll be their d6 dice pool stuff which should work well for the genre though - add some push-your-luck mechanics (already in Coriolis and MY0) and maybe something for rising threat and it could be really good.

I'm hoping that it will be more Tales from the Loop / Things from the Flood in layout than Coriolis. That was a pain to reference in play.

Maybe this could fill the gap?

Mothership is a sci-fi horror roleplaying game where you and your crew try to survive in the most inhospitable environment in the universe: outer space! You'll excavate dangerous derelict spacecraft, explore strange unknown worlds, exterminate hostile alien life, and examine the horrors that encroach upon your every move.
