Exactly what you said. Style — in bucketloads — over substance. The game is paper-thin and reminded me of HoL (Human-occupied Landfill) from the mid-90s. The raving is akin to the frenzy following the release of The Black Hack, except there was more game in TBH and slightly less gold leaf. To be clear, I'm not doing TBH down there — it made a big change in my life and it had some real chops as a set of ideas. It feels like MB is appealing to a similar mindset of do-it-yourself supplements, but there's so little in it that I can't imagine where that's going to go. I don't think we'll be looking back in 5 years time to consider the breadth of the MB-inspired game scene.
