If you are looking for an alternative free video conferencing option over Google Hangouts or Discord then Webex personal is now free with unlimited time for calls.

https://www.webex.com/

You get your own room to host meetings, a scheduler, and email invites and can be linked to calendars. You could use it just for video too if you are on a Discord server. Spread the load baby.

I've registered but not tested it yet.

I used it yesterday, it was the setup of choice for ScaledCon. It was really good, actually, better than any other approach I've tried so far.
The a/v side of things is pretty flexible, you can each choose to send audio or video as you like, and from what one player said it seems you can also choose to not receive video if your bandwidth is limited.
I also used the screen share capability to simultaneously share the MapTool window I had open, creating a VTT. It actually worked more like the face-to-face games than I expected, complete with that 'GM scribbles on the map as you move around' effect I see a lot.
You can also share control of the screen, so if a player wants to move their token to exactly the right spot the GM can let them.
Didn't suffer from any of the bandwidth nasties that I see a lot with Discord video, probably because it uses low resolution video feeds (320*240 I think?).
I recommend it, and I'll be trying it out with my 'home' group if I can.
I suspect Zoom is similarly featured, as it's also a professional video conferencing tool, but I haven't really played with that and I'm not sure they have officially dropped the 40 minute restriction on free accounts.

We played our second instalment via Zoom of our GURPS Dungeon Fantasy on Saturday. The game seems to going quite well.

I've just found and played around with Zoom's virtual backgrounds! Pretty cool and you can tailor it for the games you're playing.
