[watching] What have you seen recently?

Young Black Male, Young White Female. In the original comics he was the street and she was posh but I think they've flipped it - sort of - for the TV series.

Through a shared origin (which is rare outside of the Fantastic Four) which in the comics involved drugs (they were trying to be more "relevant" I think) they developed Superpowers. He can teleport - using a swirling black cape - and she can produce Daggers of Light. It's all about the visuals. The USP is that their powers are linked and they need to be together. It's sort of a riff on Romeo and Juliet but the clash of cultures is more enforced.

I'm sorry I can't tell you more about the TV series. I've having trouble getting invested in all these "Teen" centric Supherhero stuff. See also "Runaways". There was nothing in the first episode (which, like most series these days, couldn't be called "pilot") which called to me.

Oh, The Tick is back on Amazon Prime. After a bit of a ropey start it's back to its usual "big giggles for Superhero fans" best. Ben Edlund totally understands the big blue lump he's created and continues to present him uncompromised. These rest is just solid Superhero satire. Love it!

I've just finished the series and....

It is possibly the BEST superhero "thing" ever written! If you have Prime or know anyone who has Prime and the slightest bit of your DNA calls you towards the Superhero you NEED to watch it!

(Or I might just hit my sweet spot.)

Just watched the final fourth season of the Strain, the Manhattan vampire saga from del Toro and Hogan. Great, gripping with a poignant ending.
Satisfaction.

My word, the Tick is amazing.
Just started watching it and it does go to some dark places doesn’t?
Funny as well.
Some excellent characters and character building.

...in fact I'm quite scared that this version of the Tick might enter my Hall of Fame of perfect TV along with Stranger Things. So I'm avoiding it for the time being until I feel I deserve I this amount of fun :)

Got around to watching The Tick Season 1 today. Binged whole season. It is well cast and the story line is great.

Season 2 Binge coming tomorrow. Looking forward to it :D.

Watched Captain Marvel last night.

Interesting ideas, a lot of wasted potential for some excellent storytelling. The idea of a conditioned, indoctrinated and controlled Soldier who comes to realise they are on the side of the bad guys, that had potential. They could have explored this concept in more depth. They made cuddly the Skrulls and diminished them as potential future threats.

Found Brie Larson's Captain Marvel to be boring and not charismatic as the lead.

The Supporting Cast were much better. Sam Jackson and Ben Mendlesohn were excellent (along with the cat). When the Supporting Cast outshine the Star. Some of the action scenes were okay.

For me this ranks as one of the lowest debut / origin movies in the MCU.

Watched all 107 episodes of New Tricks over the last four months. Conventional wisdom is that it's a bland, formulaic "cosy" show but I found that a fair few episodes delved into interesting and unusual, if not downright esoteric areas e.g. stories based on spiritualism, paganism, UFOlogy (a thinly disguised version of the Rendlesham Forest incident) and riverine psycho-geographical musings more usually associated with Iain Sinclair and Peter Aykroyd. I'm almost disappointed Sandra/Sasha and the boys didn't face up to the Cthulhu Mythos. UCOS might make for a good one off scenario, or short campaign setting perhaps? (and not necessarily for CoC).

Also just finished Traitors. Post WW2 drama in which the American OSS tries to find a Soviet spy in the UK cabinet office. Quite liked it even if it seemed a little disjointed at times, and the last episode rather overwrought. Keeley Hawes and Michael Stulhbarg both put in excellent performances. I’d be interested in a second series.

I finished re-watching Cold Feet series 1-6 on Netflix. (Series 7 and 8 are not on there). Binge watching has allowed me to see how the characters develop over the first five series, and how much they change in series 6. I still miss Rachel (Helen Baxendale). It's a shame they didn't go down the path of a soft reboot and bring her back.

I finished Star Trek: Discovery season two. The overall story was better than season one, and now I'm wondering what season three will be like with the way they ended season two. There were some nice touches that pay homage to the TOS too, and the final episode felt like I was watching something from DS9. Marvellous!

Watched Casablanca with the eldest. He both picked it and enjoyed it. I'd forgotten how many phrases in common usage come from that film.

We then watched The Terminator, which was a reverse shock to him because he assumed that Arnie was a good guy (having seen bits of Terminator 2 in the past). I say reverse shock, because that was the impact that we were supposed to get in T2. He enjoyed it, and the SFX holds up okay as it was models. He wants to watch the next part.

Just binge watched the last 6 episodes of The Expanse season 1 last night, to see whether it clashes with the 20 year old Traveller scenario I am retouching for Tabletop Scotland. I am still blown away by the whole atmosphere of this program.

This is the feel I want for my near-future space stuff: the drive burns, the magnetic boots, the plots of curving trajectories. Love it.

Slightly disappointed that the end of season feels more like a mid-season break, but hopefully that just means turning the dial up for season 2!

(The adventure seems to be fine so far - no plot clash detected).
